Flying the Flag for Green Libraries launches across Greater Manchester

Young people across Greater Manchester are helping to design and make a new touring exhibition of naturally dyed silk flags celebrating nature, place and the power of libraries.

Led by Cabasa CIC with ten library services, Flying the Flag for Green Libraries pairs professional artists with local children and teens to co-create designs, then bring them to life using batik and tie-dye during Green Libraries Week (27 October–2 November). The project is funded by Libraries Connected North West.

Over the summer, Cabasa worked with youth groups to sketch themes inspired by fungi networks, local wildlife and community green spaces. This autumn, those designs are being transformed into silk flags using natural dyes, with hands-on artist-led workshops suitable for ages 10+ and family groups. The ten finished flags, one for each Greater Manchester authority, will tour libraries to inspire more young people to connect with creativity and climate action.

Upcoming youth workshops include (free)

  • Stretford Library, Trafford – Creative co-design session, Thursday 21 August 2025, 2:00–4:00pm. Free, family-friendly, led by Cabasa artists.
  • Hazel Grove Library, Stockport – Flying the Flag for Green Libraries creative workshop, Monday 27 October 2025, 10:00am. Free, family-friendly.
  • Wigan Library, Wigan – Creative workshop: Flying the Flag for Green Libraries, Friday 31 October 2025, 10:00am–12:00pm. Free, family-friendly, led by Cabasa artists.
  • Tameside Libraries – Co-design session for the Tameside flag. Date to be confirmed. Free, youth-focused, exploring fungi networks and green themes.

Earlier co-design activity also took place at Stretford Library in August, where young people helped develop the Trafford flag that will now be dyed and exhibited during Green Libraries Week.

“Flying the Flag…” places youth voice at the heart of climate creativity – giving young people practical making skills, a platform to share what matters to them, and a visible presence in their local library.

How to join in: Workshops are free and all materials are provided. Check your local library’s website or social media for booking details and additional dates across Greater Manchester.

Cabasa partners with Global Grooves to deliver Creative Careers visual arts training

Cabasa CIC is proud to be a lead partner in Creative Careers, a new programme led by Global Grooves supporting young people aged 14–25 to explore future pathways in the arts.

As the lead visual arts partner, Cabasa is delivering hands-on creative training across Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside, giving young people the chance to develop practical skills in sculpture, carnival arts, sustainable design and textiles.

Working alongside professional artists, participants will gain real-world experience, learn about creative careers, and help shape public artworks and events in their communities.

“It’s about opening doors and showing that creative careers are possible,” said Emily Wood, Artistic Director, Cabasa CIC. “We want to help young people build skills, confidence and a sense of what’s possible within the visual arts.”

Creative Careers is part of a wider regional programme led by Global Grooves, one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations, supporting the next generation of artists and producers across Greater Manchester.

Emily Wood Scoops National Award for Innovation

Emily Wood our Artistic Director has scooped a national award from Innovate UK, the UK’s Innovation Agency. The prestigious award will support her to grow her innovative business idea which will enable Cabasa to become more climate kind in our work in carnival arts and textiles.

Building on the success of Innovate UK’s targeted programmes, like Women in Innovation and Young Innovators, this latest funding is designed to find and support the fresh innovation talent the UK needs.

Emily is among the 233 high-potential innovators who has been awarded a £50,000 grant. Critically, she will also receive 12 months of tailored business support to help her grow, stimulating the UK’s economy.

“ I am a Carnival artist working in visual arts, textiles, costume, sculpture and processional art. My company, Cabasa CIC, delivers large scale carnival and outdoor art works across the UK. We work with expert professional artists, although many of our projects also engage and celebrate the voices of marginalised groups. We work for a range of clients including local authorities, town teams, Business Improvement Districts, commercial retail centres and other arts organisations.

Like many organisational leaders, I have been increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of our work. This includes topics such as synthetic dyes (used extensively in producing costume and banners) and outdoor sculptures/installations. I have begun to explore a range of natural dye alternatives, and to consider natural and locally grown textile alternatives for costumes. With support from Innovate UK I can now undertake a period of intensive R&D, leading to the development of two new public art works which can be deployed in a wide range of settings, bringing joy, energy and celebration to our shared spaces. These works will have a high level of sustainability built into their entire production cycle and will also involve audiences in questions around our relationships with public art, design, and textiles”

In line with the UK’s growing appetite for innovation, this new award programme was amongst the most highly engaged funding competitions Innovate UK has ever delivered – with over 2,100 entrepreneurs applying for funding and business mentorship. There is an urgent need to transform the UK’s skills and talent pipeline, through inspiring and connecting people to new opportunities and pathways into innovation. Innovate UK estimates that, to achieve the UK’s full economic potential, 400,000 more innovators need to be supported, from entrepreneurs to engineers.

Coinciding with the Awards announcement, Innovate UK has joined forces with over 150 partner organisations to launch its free and accessible No Limits digital platform, which makes it easy for aspiring innovators to discover new career paths, sharpen their skills and access opportunities to develop life-changing innovations and future-proof the UK economy.

We have some great rewards including:

£20 for a Metamorphosis 2021 Calendar
