WHAT IS BATIK?
Batik is the process of applying hot wax to fabric (we mainly use silk and cotton) which acts as a resist. We then hand paint the fabric with dyes and use this fabric in stunning costumes, amazing giant structures, beautiful flags and more! Here at Cabasa we create all of our own fabric for costume to be used for Carnival and other outdoor events.
ABOUT THE COURSE
Due to the UK Lockdown 2 we've had to change some of the elements to this course. This may be subject to change, guideline dependent. We will keep in regular communication with you about this.
Thursday 3rd December 2020: Online induction session via Zoom
Thursday 14th January 2021: Face-to-Face practical course begins at The Vale in Mossley.
If you’re interested in textiles, carnival, costume, getting hands on or just learning a new skill, this is the course for you! We’ll take you through the history of this amazing art form then get practical from designing, waxing and dyeing silk with our lovely in-house artists. At the end of the course you’ll come away with a beautiful silk scarf and have the opportunity transfer your new skills onto our large-scale projects…or why not start your own project?
WHERE WILL THE COURSE TAKE PLACE?
*see announcement at the top of the page regarding the Coronavirus national lockdown and this course*
We will be delivering elements of this course face-to-face with a small number of participants at The Vale in Mossley. The Vale is a Covid-secure community center and venue in Greater Manchester. Under the new Tier 3 guidance we are allowed to deliver face to face sessions under a limited capacity for the following reasons:
- for registered childcare, education or training
- support groups of up to 15 participants – formally organised groups to provide mutual aid, therapy or any other form of support (not to take place in private dwellings)
This guidance has been lifted from - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/local-covid-alert-level-very-high on October 21st 2020. The face-to-face elements of the project will be subject to change as government guidelines are updated.
All face to face sessions will be limited to 6 participants, you will be encouraged to wear a face mask (unless you are except) and social distancing will be maintained at all time. Please get in touch if you’d like to talk more about how we’re staying Covid Secure. This course is designed to give you the education and training you need to get into employment and offer support to anyone struggling from the effects of unemployment.
If you'd like to take part digitally, we can accept an additional 4 participants. We will send materials to you, but you must have access to a computer. We can support you with some digital access requirements.
